Wailea's Most Economical Resort Offers "Full Monte"

In these lean economic times, when the numbers at Hawai`i's hotels are staggeringly low, what does the newest hotel chain on the block do? Why, they advertise the opportunity to "Own Your Own Resort for $25,000 per day", of course. Duh!

Perched atop a hillside within Maui's tony Wailea Resort, the mid-level (as compared to the upscale, ocean-fronting resorts a few miles away) Hotel Wailea is aiming to position itself as a dwelling suitable for VIP groups, corporate travelers, wedding parties and perhaps some of the Hollywood entourages that have been spotted shooting (or vacationing) in Wailea as of late. The move is bold; yet these are times where the bold shine. Enter the Hotel Wailea, which positions itself as a getaway from the mega-resort getaways just down the road—with approximately half the room rates—as well as an enclave for private parties.

The hotel, which is the first Maui property to fly the Aqua Resorts management flag, features 72 "one-bedroom suites", each with private lanai and ocean views. With the "Rent your own resort" package, big spenders will have the run of all the rooms, daily continental breakfast, valet parking, full use of the restaurant and kitchen (in case you are traveling with your own chef), run of the spa facilities, shuttle service throughout Wailea and use of the Hotel Wailea Beach Club.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this deal is the notion of having choice reservations at Capische? Restaurant (yes, the question mark is a part of the eatery's name), the best Italian eatery State wide. Helmed by chef Brian Etheridge, Capische? not only offers a glorious setting, but their wine dinners prepared table-side on one of two teppan-yaki-style grills is an experience no foodie should miss. (This requires a week's notice during most months.)

Yet don't let all the highfalutin gems distract you: What sets the Hotel Wailea apart for discerning travelers on some sort of budget—and where the excellent management philosophy of Aqua Resorts comes in to play—are the little things that the mega-resorts with global brands cannot offer. Free wireless internet access from all rooms, iPod docking stations, kitchenettes, and so on. Hence this hotel should be on the radar for locals who have taken countless weekend jaunts to Lahaina or Ka'anapali, and are look to mix things up by heading to the gilded avenues of Wailea.
