Think Outside The Gift Box When Giving This Season

Think Outside The Gift Box When Giving This Season

'Tis the season for that extra serving of dessert, the "sure I'll have another" cocktail at the company holiday party or the "It's only once a year" purchases. While I would never suggest rethinking what it is that makes the holidays special for you, I do have some creative, health-conscious ways for you to consider gift giving. With so many heart-healthy gifts right out our front doors, don't you think it's time to think outside the gift box?

I know you're well aware that cardiovascular fitness reduces blood pressure, anxiety, tension, body fat storage and cholesterol. So this year, give a loved one the gift of life. Take advantage of the activities we are so lucky to have at our year-round disposal, and encourage loved-ones to do something they might not have pursued on their own. It will truly be the gift that keeps on giving!

Some ideas include:

  1. A date to swim with dolphins off the Kohala (Big Island), Waianae (Oahu) or Manele (Lana'i) coasts.
  2. A "book" of Yoga passes to a nearby studio. For the adventurous, creative type, try a gift certificate to a N.I.A. (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) class, which is a mixture of modern dance, Tai Chi, yoga, karate and more.
  3. A card with tickets for salsa lessons for two.
  4. A day of hiking with one of your local adventure or eco guide companies.
  5. A day of kayaking on the water. Look for a company that employs a naturalist, or someone that can guide you and give you a brief history or oceanography lesson while you get some aerobic exercise.
  6. A personal training session for those who belong to a gym.
  7. A tennis lesson.

Get creative, be active and enjoy a healthy holiday season!
