You've seen them paddling out past the line-ups, off towards the horizon, as if in a trance. Big boys (and girls) on big boards with a long paddle, heaving their way through the chop. It isn't hard to see the allure of stand up paddleboarding; which is probably the reason it's now a global phenomenon. This June, legendary shaper and professional big-wave surfer Gerry Lopez, teams up with Rainbow Sandals, the Outrigger Reef on the Beach hotel and Quicksilver to feature the first annual "Battle of the Paddle" Stand-up Paddle Festival.
Set for June 12 and 13 at historic Duke Kahanamoku Beach and Fort DeRussy Beach Park, the Battle of the Paddle will present a festival and exposition dedicated to all things stand-up, as well as a series of races with a purse of $25,000. There will be autograph signing sessions with Lopez and other famous wave riders on Saturday, as well as an under-the-stars screening of the O`ahu-filmed Blue Crush movie, at the Outrigger Reef.
Along with Lopez will be the Roxy Team Riders, who will also meet with the public and sign autographs.
The races will commence on both Saturday and Sunday, while the movie screening at the Reef will follow the autograph session at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Outrigger on the Reef is offering a special kama`aina rate for the weekend of $139 per night.
