Slack Rocker Makana Launches Music Charity, Concerts Ensue

Oahu's own slack rock star Makana has teamed with Kona Brewing Company to host the first "I Ho'ili Kamali'i" (translation: "In Leaving a Legacy for the Children of the Land") charity concert, which aims to give the gift of music to children throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The event will take place this Thursday, June 26, from 5:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Makana chose Waikiki's RumFire lounge as the venue for this auspicious event, which is garnering the reputation as Oahu's hottest new ocean fronting music and spirits venue. Throughout the evening, raffle tickets will be sold, worth $3,000 in prizes from Honolulu's top artists and restaurants. All of the proceeds from the event will go directly to the non-profit I Ho'ili Kamali'i.

RumFire, located on the beach side of the Sheraton Waikiki, is open on two sides to the trade winds, and boasts dual fire pits with surrounding lounge seating. Makana has held court there over the last few months, moving his Chinatown Indigo gig to the crystalline shores of Waikiki. It was during this time that he conceptualized the idea to launch a charity that focuses entirely on bringing unique music experiences into schools, acquiring instruments for students, and creating opportunities for them to interact directly with the musicians of Hawai'i.

Makana will perform (along with surprise guests) from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., disc jockey "Mr. Nick" will spin down tempo and Samba beats over the sound of crashing surf, swirling rum drinks and laughter.
