Mana Yoga Mountain Retreat On Kauai

Michaelle Edwards' Mana Yoga Center in Princeville, Kauai, is gearing up for the first in a series of Yoga Adventure Retreats. The excursions will meld Edwards' signature "yogalign" style of yoga, meant to heal and realign a participants spinal chord in order to enhance total body performance and well being. Edwards informed us in an exclusive interview this week that giant wave rider Laird Hamilton, ISP champion surfer Andy Irons and actor Mariel Hemingway are but a few of her dedicated students. Practicing other forms of yoga for more than 35 years, Edwards had been cultivating yogalign for the last 15 years.

"I had seen far too many poor examples of various forms of yoga and the damages that were incurred," Edwards said. "People were coming to my yoga center afraid -- because of injuries they have had due to poor instruction, and intimidation by other practices that allowed no room for learning."

A licensed yoga instructor and massage therapist (Edwards offers "yoga-ssage" at Mana as well, a practice she claims release deep patterns of bad posturing by teaching the body to re-align and strengthen itself), she is launching the yoga retreats at the command of her devout following, who reside both on and off Kauai.

"I have these rental units at my center, here in Princeville. And the homes are stacked with bikes, kayaks, bodyboards and other toys," Edwards states. "And after spending a great deal of time explaining exactly where my guests should go for various adventures, one finally said 'You should lead tours!' So I am."

The first 7-day Yoga Adventure Retreat will be offered to 14 people and take place from March 19 -- 25, 2007. There will be yoga sessions in various locations throughout the day, as well as surf instruction, guided hikes through Kokee National Park and the Napali Coast, a visit to Kauai's Hindu Temple and sacred Hawaiian heiaus, plus swimming in hidden waterfalls, and even music sessions around a campfire in the evenings. Edwards can accommodate about half the group on her 5-acre Mana Yoga Center, while she will secure nearby guest housing for the remaining participants.

Stay tuned to B on Hawaii, and we will have the specifics of her inaugural retreat. Until then, Mana Yoga Center offers one-hour yogalign sessions starting at $80 per hour, a flat group rate. Rental of the 2-bedroom cottage is $795 per week; the studio is $495. The Center is located on beneath the towering mountains and waterfalls past Princeville Ranch, only a few miles from Hanalei and the Princeville Resort.
