The Mama's Fish House Experience: Now Online

The Mama's Fish House Experience: Now Online

For those who have not had the pleasure of a breezy lunch or serene sunset dinner at Mama's Fish House on Maui, take a gander at their freshly renovated Web site – a small taste of the Mama's experience. We normally don't point out these types of things, but the end results of the redesign are an exemplary study in a great Web effort.

Included in the colorful and manageable layout are distinct sections for both the restaurant and Inn at Mama's – something not everyone is aware exists on the "Mama's compound" grounds. But perhaps that's better off: There are only 4 villas for rent, and it might take a visit or two for guests to "get" the Maui spirit before they deserve a stay in one of the island's more magical locations.

We recommend clicking on the "Videos & Extras" tab, where you can watch video about the fish caught by Mama's-contracted fisherman. A brief description of each fish is given, which adds a nice touch (since most of us only see filets on a plate). In addition, a wonderful section called "Mama's Memories" traces the Christianson's 1960 journey from San Diego to the Marquesias and eventually Tahiti – where current vice president Karen Christianson was born a French-Tahitian-American citizen! There are beautiful pictures of the family aboard the sailboat, as well as anecdotes about the journey. Did anyone know that Mama's founder Floyd Christianson was in Mutiny on the Bounty? We didn't! Talk about right place, right time...

Visit the new site, and more importantly, make the trip past Paia to Mama's. Take a long look around the Bill Kohl-designed restaurant while you're waiting for your entrees. Choose a glass of wine you might not ordinarily pick. Notice the names of every fisherman (and their vessel) listed for each seafood item on the menu (too cool). After coffee, kick your shoes off and sift all ten toes through the brown sugary beach that stretches between coconut palm trees on the shoreline. Take a silly photo. Enjoy the beauty of an upcountry Maui day...
