Kona Brew Fest: Suds Up in March

Kona Brew Fest: Suds Up in March

Time to start making arrangements to be on the Big Island of Hawaii in mid-March: The annual “Brews for the Big Rock” Kona Brewers Festival is slated for Saturday, March 12, 2011, from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. You too can sip homespun suds on the glistening shores of Kailua-Kona, perched over the storied grounds of the King Kamehameha Hotel.

And while we know many of you are already planning on flying our way (or hopping neighbor islands for a much needed weekend getaway), consider making a few of the secondary events that are available to beer enthusiasts. On Thursday evening, a Brewer’s Paina will pit top south shore chefs against one another in crafting the finest culinary creations that either use, or pair perfectly with, beer (of course). The al fresco dinner also features live music, which inevitably ends in an evening of dancing under the stars. (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.)

On Friday, March 12, the 4th annual Kona Brewers Fest Golf Open boasts a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, and will certainly be one of the more entertaining days you’ll have on the links. Get a team together, or join another, for a day of teeing off in the sunshine.

Finally, on Saturday morning, prior to your suds swilling, a “Run for Hops” commences at 7:30 a.m. Both 5K and 10K routes are offered, as well as a keiki bike rodeo, expo, healthy picnic and beer tasting at Kona Brewing Company following the run. Participants need to sign up in advance, and can follow directions at the festival’s web site (www.KonaBrewersFestival.com).

Hotel rooms at the Royal Kona Resort and King Kamehameha Beach Hotel currently range from $115 to $155 per night.
