Kea Lani Unveils Art Lounge

In these lean times, hotels and resorts are rolling out the incentives to allure business—be it local or distant. In our opinion, it's really given opportunity to those with creative business savvy, who can think on their feet, and offer truly unique experiences that just might raise an eyebrow—or at the very least—make us forget our portfolios and retirement funds for a spell.

The Fairmont Kea Lani on Maui unveiled such an effort this week: A new, public lounge that features local artists, a comfortable place to kick off your sandals and put your heels up, as well as soak in the spectacular sunset views.

The Kea Lani's (formerly under-utilized) lobby bar has been aptly transformed in to Luana Lounge ("Luana" in Hawaiian translates to "Enjoy pleasant surroundings", "To live in comfort and ease" or "To be at leisure"), complete with new culinary and bar menus, decor and ambiance. Luana will feature nightly entertainment from local musicians, as well as cabana-esque couches that nod to a bygone era of Moroccan piano bars or swinging Parisian jazz clubs. Decor themes revolve around the heavens, all the better to create a mystical, celestial vibe, according to hotel manager Scott Ingwers.

"It's a beautiful change to the lobby area, and in keeping with other recent improvements around the resort," said Ingwers.

The menu at Luana Lounge includes items such as Hamakua Ali'i mushroom flat bread with Maui onion; crab and asparagus sushi; and caviar. Original cocktails make use of fresh, local ingredients, including martinis made with pomegranate juice and a Mojito that utilizes local cucumber.

The main feature of the lounge will be a revolving gallery of artwork, which will change each season. On the first evening of each new artist's show, the painter or sculptor will join guests in a champagne toast at 5:00 p.m., and remain on-hand to share thoughts about his or her work throughout the course of the evening.

Dale Zarrella is the debut artist this season.

In addition, the Kea Lani recently re-launched the resort's children's club, "Keiki Lani". The club features an elevated stage for performances, and numerous activities (with supervision) for kids visiting the resort, ages 5 to 13.
