Iron Chefs, Kauai Style: You be the Judge

Always on the lookout for new culinary haps around the islands, we recently were alerted to a rather unique sounding event that will take place on Kauai each month. At Shell's Restaurant in Poipu's Sheraton Kauai, chefs will "square off" in an Iron Chefs-esque competition to be judged by restaurant patrons.

The idea, inspired by the Food Network's Iron Chefs series, pairs nicely with the Japanese and Western influences of Hawaii cooking—an interesting parallel to the success of the Japanese and American versions of the popular cooking show.

The winning chef is determined by responses to a culinary survey filled out by participating dinners on the evening of the event, paired with the number of dishes sold by the competing chefs. During the debut event last month, executive sous chef Edwin Mizuno battled sous chef Ikaika Manaku, for the prize of $100. Each was allowed to utilize filet mignon, jumbo prawns, Kileaua jabong, Oma'o arugula, pickled ginger, green onions, caviar and champagne.
