Hidden Gem: BBQ Joint in Waimanalo Draws a Crowd

If you're anything like us, you love the melding of cultures here in Hawai`i as much as the wild flavors of cuisine that have come from them. But let's face it: Every now and again you crave good 'ole slow-smoked Southern BBQ. Sweet Home Waimanalo is scratching that itch, o'er yonder on the east shore of O`ahu.

Located on Kalaniana'ole Highway, next door to Patrick Ching's Naturally Hawaiian Art Gallery, Sweet Home Waimanalo follows through with an earnest effort to serve plate lunch style food with no less than twice the consideration that most plate lunch locales. Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sweet Home smokes all of their meats on-site, including beef brisket, pork ribs, St. Louis-style ribs, honey-citrus chicken breast and even tofu. All if these can be ordered by the pound (average pound is about $10), on a combo plate, a sandwich or over a salad. When fresh fish is available, Sweet Home smokes it, too.

Sides range from the standard corn-on-the-cob and slow-cooked BBQ beans, to a crunchy bok choi slaw, Okinawan sweet potato and mango chutney salad, and Paniolo potato mac salad.

Not without something for the health-fiends, they offer a short menu of smoothies and Acai bowls, in addition to the tangiest ginger-honey lemonade we've tasted (and now crave), as well as illy fine Italian coffee.

Best yet, Sweet Home Waimanalo caters outside events, family BBQs, luau and the like.

Sweet Home Waimanalo is located at 41-1025 Kalanaianaole Highway. The full menu can be read at www.SweetHomeWaimanalo.com or by calling (808) 259-5737.
