Hawaii International Jazz Festival's Free Windward Concert

Abe Weinstein's Hawaii International Jazz Festival filled Windward breezes with the sounds of harmonious jazz for the first time in event history. On Sunday, February 11, 2007, residents and visitors were treated to a free concert at Windward Community College, which, if you have never been, is tucked beneath the magnificent Koolau Mountain range a short ride from the Pali and H-3 highways.

Free parking, no tickets, food booths and continuous music are guaranteed from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The program includes seasoned artists like Weinstein, Gabe Baltazar, DeShannon Higa and Jeff Peterson, in addition to performances by the Castle High School Jazz Band, the Marine Forces Pacific Band and others. Adding some diversity to the level of performers, Mayor Mufi Hannemann will join the Iolani School Stage Band to see if the man who keeps our city together can carry a tune. (See lineup below.)

An art exhibit showcased Windward Oahu intermediate and high school students' who have created innovative "visual jazz" posters specifically for the event. Prizes will be awarded to the winners, which include a ukulele donated by Ukulele House, Jamba Juice certificates and more.

A proponent of music education (and accomplished saxophonist), Weinstein and a handful of the featured artists will offer free clinics to young musicians at surrounding schools the week prior to the show. (Visit www.hawaiijazz.com for more information.)

Weinstein encourages Windward residents and all visitors to arrive with their own picnic blankets, chairs, picnic baskets and whatever will enhance their comfort during the day's festivities. The lineup is as follows:
