Four-Stringed Rock Stars Take Stage At Duke's Waikiki

It's time: For the 2nd annual Duke's Ukes Contest, to be held on Saturday, September 8, 2007. The best amateur ukulele players will cue up to take the stage at Duke's Waikiki, in Oahu's Outrigger Waikiki, starting at 10 a.m.

The contest will be broken in to age groups: Kids from 6-10 will compete against each other, while 11-15 is the next category, followed by the 16-18 year olds, then 19 and up. Participation is free, but advanced registration is required. Finger pickers and strummers need to audition at the Outrigger on the Beach on August 11 and August 18.

Last year, the age range was 6 to 71, according to a senior manager at Duke's, who said the thrill of the event was the varied stage presence of the performers, who ranged from deer-in-headlights performances to Jimi Hendrix-esque antics.

The event is sponsored by Outrigger, the Pacific Music Foundation and Kamaka Ukuleles. Email Maria McGregor for more information at maria@beckercommunications.com, or call (808) 533-4165.
