Enoteca Arrives! Sapori to Open in Place of Elua

You'll hear it here first: There will be a new enoteca-style wine bar and birreria opening in Kaka`ako, O`ahu, in time for the holidays. Sapori—a partnership between chef-entrepreneur Donato Loperfido and general manager-wine director Cynthia Fenner—will feature authentic Italian dishes, a variety of wines served by the glass, and an atmosphere reminiscent of the popular gathering spots found throughout Loperfido's home country of Italy.

Fenner, formerly a sommelier for Neiman Marcus' Fine Foods division, will man the helm of a 24-bottle wine cruvinet, which is meant to showcase magnums. She will offer 2- and 5-ounce pours from dozens of varietals. Additionally, Fenner will custom order craft beers that pair with the menu. Flights of both wine and beer will be available.

The food will be designed by Loperfido, Fenner, and Chef Scott Nelson, who moves over from Brasserie du Vin in Chinatown. Sapori will be located in the space formerly occupied by Elua. We at B on Hawaii have been made privy to an early copy of the Sapori menu, and are thrilled to share a few items. They include: Roulade of house made Mozzerella, roasted peppers, asparagus and arugula, served with local tatsoi and mizuna salad ($10); Flat bread of smoked Ali`i mushrooms, soft Brie, marinated onions and oven-dried tomatoes ($6); Pan-fried polenta with bean cake, roasted beet, goat cheese and pomegranate molasses served with baby greens and Big Island honey vinaigrette ($10); House-made Pappardelle with wild boar ragout, Tuscan style ($12); Charred Rib Eye, grilled radicchio, asparagus and blue cheese ($18).

While an official open date for Sapori hasn't been announced, their hours will be Tuesdays through Sundays, 4:30 p.m. to midnight. The enoteca is located at 1341 Kapiolani Blvd., in the Uraku Tower. Parking is free.
