A Rising-Star Chef and an Upcoming Winemaker's Dinner

Breaking News from Tranquil Hana!

It’s not often that hot news comes careening down from the rain-forested climes of Hana, Maui. But word came careening down from the Valley Isle’s North Shore that a new executive chef is en route to the hotel this Spring.

Our Hana source tells us that Robert McCormick, who has been under the tutelage of Daniel Boulud, one of New York’s hottest fine dining restaurateurs and French chefs, will take over the executive chef role at the upscale Hana haunt.

McCormick was most recently a corporate sous chef for Boulud’s Dinex restaurant group in New York City, which followed a stint in Las Vegas as chef d’ Cuisine at Daniel Boulud Brasserie from 2005 to 2007.

The bringing onboard of a rising culinary star comes as the Hotel Hana Maui recently fell under new owner-management—the Arden Grove Hospitality group. We had the pleasure of meeting Arden’s top dog, Philip Wood, at February’s “Hana Harvest” event, which B on Hawaii co-founded. Wood shared some rather intriguing plans he has for the venerable property, which we certainly will look forward sharing more of in the coming months.

Wood’s Arden Grove also operates a small, luxury retreat in upstate New York, which caters to the well-heeled looking to escape the stresses of Manhattan. According to Wood, the company is considering like investments in the Napa–Sonoma region.

In the meantime, the Hotel Hana Maui continues to attract food and wine aficionados through its winemaker dinners, which have already garnered a loyal following. The next event takes place on Thursday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. The “Superstars of the Oregon Wine Industry” will include no less than nine winemaker attendees representing top wineries from Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

The program’s “Wine Hunt” format will position each of the winemaker’s vintages throughout the hotel’s grounds. Current executive chef Keoki McKee will craft culinary treats (made from 100% Hana produce, fish and meats) to pair with the wine selections.

The winemakers in attendance will include: Ken Wright from Ken Wright Cellars and Tyrus Evan; Micheal Etzel of Beaux Freres; Josh Bergstrom from Bergstrom Vineyards; David Adelsheim of Adelsheim Vineyards; Harry Paterson-Nedry from Chehalem; Laurent Motalieu from Solena; Lynn Penner-Ash of Penner Ash Wine Cellars; and Bill and Debra Hatcher of A to Z Wineworks and Rex Hill Vineyards and Winery.

The cost is $80  per person, reservations are recommended. Call 808 248-8211 to reserve, or visit www.HotelHanaMaui.com for further information.
