Big Board Classic at Makaha: Where the Buffalo Play

How many times have you said in conversation: "Man, I totally need to get out to Makaha." Well, here's the perfect opportunity. The Buffalo Big Board Surfing Classic will be held this coming weekend, February 13 – 15, on Makaha Beach. Hosted by legendary waterman Buffalo Keaulana, this truly Hawaiian event is equal parts: A study in Hawaiian surfing culture, part excuse to swill some Primo Beer (they're a sponsor), and part excuse to lounge on the brown sugary-sand beaches of the rowdy West Side.

In it's 34th year, the Buffalo Classic wrangles all the big boys—literally—from Mel Pu`u, to Bonga Perkins and Buff's son, Brian Keaulana. There are 14 events throughout the weekend, from kids' heats, to legends and Stand Up.

For the third year, the contest boasts a "Bombucha Division", or, agile fellas who weigh over 250 lbs. The weigh in, an event in itself, will take place on Saturday morning, as dozens of heavy hitters step on a see-saw opposite 250-pounds worth of Primo beer bottles. If the applicant falls short of the 250 mark, he is ushered in to a tent full of hearty "grindz" where he can attempt to eat "up" to weight. We're totally not kidding.

Winners in the Bombucha Division this year will win prizes from that include custom boards, a glass trophy and enough beer to entertain their dearest friends throughout at least one beach party.

A wee bit 'o knowledge: Keaulana was the steersman on the Polynesian sailing vessel The Hokulea on its maiden voyage to Tahiti in 1976. After enduring a rough 35-day crossing, a pal suggested he mark the achievement with a contest that would honor top watermen. The Buffalo Classic was born.

This year, contestant entrants come from as far as Shohan, Japan.

We highly endorse bringing a cooler of frosty beverages, a tent, plenty of sunscreen and a BBQ for a day of fun and high-jinx on the shores of Makaha.

Entry forms for the Buffalo Big Board Classic can still be found at www.BuffaloSurfingClassic.com or at local surf shops.
