Azure Opens, BeachHouse Hits Stride

A pair of Waikiki beachfront resorts have begun to hit their culinary stride: As one veteran chef hones his menu, and the buzz from a new eatery can be heard within foodie circles... Chef Rodney Uyehara, who has manned the helm at the Westin Moana Surfrider's BeachHouse—and endured various directional changes from a corporate consulting firm that was (past tense) overseeing the restaurant—seems to have finally nailed down a solid menu at this picture-perfect locale. And, just down the beach, the recently re-opened (and looking spectacular) Royal Hawaiian Resort has brought in the young but accomplished Jon Matsubara to launch Azure; a chicly decorated eatery complete with cabana dining (think The Delano on Miami Beach).

Highlights in recent visits to both include the iced raw bar at BeachHouse, followed by Uyehara's eloquently pomegranate-infused Australian lamb chops and pineapple fried rice; Azure's plump, saké steamed Manila clams, kiawe-smoked ribs followed by the "Kona Shellfish Bowl" cioppino with chili broth are not to be missed. Matsubara's Kahuku corn and Hamakua mushrooms were the perfect accompaniment to nearly everything on the table, especially the homemade green-tea soba noodles.

This Mother's Day (Sunday, May 10), BeachHouse is featuring a special brunch with multiple seatings (every half hour) between 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Highlights are vast, and range from steamed jumbo shrimp, Alaskan Chinook salmon with a "Hamakua Heritage" mushroom mix and pesto sage ravioli, braised veal cheeks with orzo risotto, and Georgia peach crepes with Tahitian Vanilla sauce, to name a few.  There will be a set menu with multiple options as well as a  full buffet, which will include a poke and salad station, a chocolate fondue "river" and other surprises.

The brunch is priced at $70 per person ($77 with champagne), and $35 for children under 12. Parking is free.
