Authentic Coffee Haus Opens in HNL

For a town the size of Honolulu, let’s agree that we have an acceptable number of coffee shops. Yet, when we factor in that Hawaii is the only state in the nation that produces coffee, it’s safe to say that there’s no harm in lauding another into the mix. Especially when its owner aims to provide patrons with the best possible cup o’ joe, procured using a variety of methods, yet each utilizing 100 percent Hawaii-grown coffee.

Beach Bum Café (don’t let the name fool you; these guys mean business), which opens this week on Bishop street in downtown Honolulu, is the brain child of Dennis McQuoid. Taking note of the lack of consistent home-brewed coffee in Hawaii’s bustling city center, McQuiod tapped “Doctor Coffee” Shawn Steiman to consult on this no frills “microbrew coffee house” that will strictly serve made-to-order coffee.

Methods of coffee extraction—including espresso, Chemex, vacuum pot and cloth filtered coffee—will all be utilized here. McQuoid’s goal, according to his debut press release, is to alter a landscape void of “thought-provoking coffees”.

The café will open its doors this week; the official grand opening will be during February’s First Friday art gala in nearby Chinatown. Patrons of that event are extended invites to swing by Beach Bum for a pick-me-up until 9:00 p.m.
Regular business hours will be 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., weekdays only.
