Mama's Fish House in Ku‘au, Maui, has always led the charge in giving credit where credit is due. Long before "Farm-to-Table" was a trend, the venerable culinary attraction located on the slopes of Haleakala was printing the names of vessels and captains who were responsible for getting fresh-caught fish from the ocean to your table. Now, the eatery's owners and executive chef, Perry Bateman, have announced that they will sponsor the deployment of a new fishing buoy in waters 30 miles off the northeastern coast of Maui.

This Wednesday, June 13, 2012, a considerable amount of magic will unfold on the sugar sand beaches (and nearby climes) of Wailea, Maui. So will begin the 13th Annual Maui Film Festival—the brain child of Barry Rivers—and the unofficial pride of West Maui that enables A-list celebrities to rub elbows with the rest of us along a bucolic stretch of paradise (we really wanted to use another word here, but none fits as aptly).

Sammy Hagar, of Van Halen fame (or infamy, depending on which side of the fence you pump your fist), is bestowing a special little New Year's treat on the residents of Alohaland—and eventually the world. It seems "Mr. Tequila" is branching out into the distillation world (after selling his Cabo Wabo tequila brand for a whopping $100 million, yowza),

It seems "Mr. Tequila" is branching out into the distillation world, this time down rum avenue (like a good pirate). And the fruits of his labor will be only available to Hawai‘i residents for the first few months of production. 

There’s still time to head over to Wailea to indulge in some hefty “Restaurant Week” binge eating and, without question, the eating is good. Having seen significant growth throughout the years since the posh folks in Wailea launched the effort has proven that the effort is worth repeating. Pre-fixe menus range from $29 to $39 or $49 dollars, depending on venue and items ordered.

One of our favorite locales—statewide—is the charming Pineapple Grill at Kapalua. Chef Ryan Luckey’s food is innovative and island-harvested; managing partner Chris Kaiwi’s wine knowledge (and selection) is only topped by his style of managing an efficient and pleasant staff (his penchant for lesser-known cheese imports is also impressive) and the list goes on. Yet, like any restaurant that stands out, it’s always been the delicate balance (or dance, a friend likes to say) of all these things and more that make Pineapple Grill such a standout.
