Chef Mavro Rolls Out the White Linens: Caviar Tasting Optional

We wanted to alert culinarians to a special time in Honolulu—thanks to the quick thinking (and palate tantalizing) of one Chef George Mavrothalassitis. Indeed, the man who refuses to let our taste buds squander but a few days without some form of classic cookery bedazzled down to its rawest form and reborn with an island tinge... has a new offering.
Prior to either your three, four or six-course tasting menu, diners can opt for a caviar tasting and presentation worthy of royalty.

Kauai Grill Celebrates One Year, Garners Loyal Following

While we like to make a practice of covering events yet-to-come in order to give esteemed readers the opportunity to attend them, this “wrap up” of a just-passed culinary extravaganza from Jean-George’s Kauai Grill at the St. Regis Princeville is well worth the space. Trumpeting their one-year anniversary last week, the resort’s food and beverage team paired with Kauai Grill chef de cuisine Colin Hazama to bring locals and hotel guests a truly innovative menu that celebrated the notion of maintaining a Hawaiian ahupua‘a.

Offer expires December 2011.

The Jewel Designer and the Conservationist Talk Coral Reef

A Sit Down with Temple St. Clair Carr and Celine Cousteau

You may have noticed an increase in the awareness of coral reef preservation as of late. Sure, it’s a prevalent subject—one that’s been pertinent here in Hawaii—for a long time. (Duh! We’re surrounded by this living organism.) Yet worldwide, it seems that both conservationists, environmentalists—and now fashionistas—have caught wind of the dire need to protect these colorful outcroppings just beneath the waves.
Recently, we at B on Hawaii had the unique opportunity to speak with two leading advocates of the protection of coral, who together aim to initiate the complete ban of it for use in jewelry and fashion.

The islands are teeming with upscale culinary events this month—and here’s one you won’t want to miss. The finale event in the “Mangoes at the Moana” series is this Friday’s “Tree to Table: A Mango Throw Down” to take place at the Westin Moana Surfrider. (For malihini/visitors who couldn’t already smell it in the air, its mango harvest season in Hawaii.)
