Memorial Lantern Float a Sight to Behold

How many times have you endured a holiday weekend and, somewhere between frosty “adult” beverage numbers three and four (or thereabouts) thought: “Wow, I don’t even know what this holiday is all about!” or something similar? Thankfully, this year you can experience less of what has become a kick-off-the-summer weekend, and more of what it actually signifies. We’re talking Memorial Day—and there’s no better place to be than in Ala Moana Beach Park watching or participating in the 13th Annual Lantern Floating ceremony

Restaurant Week Wailea: There's Still Time to Eat!

There’s still time to head over to Wailea to indulge in some hefty “Restaurant Week” binge eating and, without question, the eating is good. Having seen significant growth throughout the years since the posh folks in Wailea launched the effort has proven that the effort is worth repeating. Pre-fixe menus range from $29 to $39 or $49 dollars, depending on venue and items ordered.

Pineapple Grill Maui to Celebrate Anniversary with Tasty Benefit

One of our favorite locales—statewide—is the charming Pineapple Grill at Kapalua. Chef Ryan Luckey’s food is innovative and island-harvested; managing partner Chris Kaiwi’s wine knowledge (and selection) is only topped by his style of managing an efficient and pleasant staff (his penchant for lesser-known cheese imports is also impressive) and the list goes on. Yet, like any restaurant that stands out, it’s always been the delicate balance (or dance, a friend likes to say) of all these things and more that make Pineapple Grill such a standout.
On Saturday, May 28, 2011, Pineapple Grill celebrates

Peace Day Parade: Held Locally, Seen Globally

We recently heard this statement on the local news: “It’s a lot harder fixing a broken adult than it is educating a receptive child”. While understandably controversial, in essence, it’s true. Steering a child down the right path is the best shot we have at making our future bright and prosperous.

There’s plenty of summer left to get out and have some family fun.

New Wedding Venue: Outrigger Al Fresco

Last week, Outrigger Hotels unveiled a brand new wedding venue in Waikiki that just may rival any in bustling Waikiki. Capping a $110 million property renovation, the Outrigger Reef has opened the all-new "Voyager Deck", a 6,000 square foot, 3rd floor event space that overlooks Honolulu's serene ocean waters.

Chai Celebrates Dual Anniversaries on November 20th at Aloha Tower

You know him as the smiley faced restaurateur-about-town, always at the happening spot at the right time. On Friday, November 20th at 6:00 p.m., Chai Chaowasaree will host a culinary party the likes of which we have yet to see in 2009, to celebrate the coinciding 20th anniversary of Singha Thai and the 10th of Chai's Island Bistro.

The Sea, Illuminated: Floating Lanterns

Let's face it: Memorial Day has always been another three-day "pardon" from the shackles of work... and not much more. Even here in Hawaii, the extent of "memorializing" is usually minimized to trying to get our neighbor's black lab out from under the house after the F-1 fighter jets do a fly-by.

The Year of Bev Gannon: A Celebration, a New Book, TV Appearances, The White House and more

This year, renown chef (and Hawaii Regional Cuisine movement founder) Beverly Gannon is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hali'imaile General Store with a benefit event worthy of the trek upcountry, Maui. But that's not all she's up to: Gannon just might be the busiest Maui chef at press time.

Ka'anapali Nights: A New Concert Series on Maui has Roots that Run Deep

[This article appears courtesy of Hawaiian Style Magazine]

The Royal Lahaina Resort's ocean-front concert series that began this past summer is not just about a picture-perfect evening spent absorbing the sounds of crashing waves and slack key guitar. In fact, the Saturday night mele isn’t solely the culmination of two performer’s careers.
