The first whispers of the holiday season can be heard around town, and like most years, everyone is beginning to look for that unique gift to bestow upon their loved one(s). Just in the nick of time, the Honolulu Academy of Arts is celebrating it's annual "World Art Bazaar" at the Academy Art Center at Linekona, in Honolulu.
Running through December 14th, the World Art Bazaar is a collection of contemporary and antique goods the museum has collected from around the world, and then sells to in-the-know visitors during the holiday season. The kicker: There are items to fit most all budgets, and the Academy insures all goods were acquired through Fair Trade practices. This year, items include rare Japanese lithographs, vintage Chinese furniture, Indian ceramics, hand-woven Indonesian textiles and various jewels from across the globe. We've gotten the inside word that the featured items this year are vintage Japanese haori jackets.
The perfect holiday gifts to bring home abound!
Throughout the holidays, the Academy of Arts is featuring exhibits that include: "He Ho'ala Ana/An Awakening: Kapa by Marie McDonald", which elegantly showcases McDonald's dyed kapa. McDonald is the descendant of Hawaiian royalty, an author, artist, teacher and authority on the art of making lei.
Also showing (beginning December 18 and extending through March 1, 2009) will be "Muraqqa': Imperial Mugha Albums from the Chester Beatty Library". The collection, from one of the most reputable Mughal painting collections in the word, traveled from its home in Dublin, Ireland, where it can be viewed at the Academy. More than 100 paintings, calligraphies and manuscripts depicting imperial albums made for Indian emperors such as Jahangir (ca. 1605) and Shah Jahan (1628-1657), who built the Taj Mahal can be seen.
The World Art Bazaar at the Honolulu Academy of Arts is located at 1111 Victoria St; 532-8700.
It will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
